November 18 - Session 16

Next Steps for Nonpartisan Civic Engagement and Housing Justice

This webinar covered strategies to hold elected officials accountable to their campaign promises and advocate for long-term, systemic change to increase voter access--including a special presentation from Representative Jesús “Chuy” Garcia (D-IL-04) on the Our Homes, Our Votes Act. The saved chat can be found here and the transcript can be found here. The webinar recording and slideshow can be found below.

Courtney Cooperman, project manager of the Our Homes, Our Votes campaign at NLIHC, summarized key housing and homelessness ballot measures that passed on Election Day. She previewed the upcoming Our Homes, Our Votes ballot measures report, which will summarize approximately 100 measures and feature case studies of successful ballot measure advocacy campaigns. Brooke Schipporeit, director of field organizing at NLIHC, provided tools to stay engaged in ongoing housing advocacy post-election, including NLIHC’s Advocacy Hub, a one-stop shop for immediate advocacy opportunities and educational resources for organizations and individuals. Representative Jesús “Chuy” Garcia (D-IL-04), lead congressional sponsor of the Our Homes, Our Votes Act, presented about the bill and encouraged attendees to endorse it. The Our Homes, Our Votes Act would break down barriers to voting for residents in public and federally subsidized housing by integrating voter registration into the lease-up process. Learn more about the bill and take action here.

If your organization would like to endorse the bill, please email Courtney Cooperman at ccooperman@nlihc.org
